When I first saw this book, I picked it up for it s delightfully cute drawings After flipping through its first few pages, I was treated to it s black humor and almost child like writing This made for a fast, fun read, and I tore through it in a day. However, there is an edge to this book that I did not see coming The truth is, no matter how cute these little guys are, they are at war And war has its cost You don t really see any of this until close to the end where suddenly the book takes a dark turn This quick shift from adorable to depressing makes the final message all the poignant war is awful and and its cost is far too heavy to justify it.Think of this book as being in the same realm as All Quiet on the Western Front but meant for a younger audience I thoroughly believe this is a book that should be used in schools It s a quick read that still manages to send the message home.

I got this title based on a recommendation from a fellow librarian Tyler Rousseau It s a comic that examines warand is a great read whether you re looking at a fun look at a made up world, or a deep examination of the futility of war.and it s a fast readdefinitely worth getting and trying.

The illustrations were cute and it was definitely a field guide, but it was not gripping I wish it had had the field guide balanced alongside a story, since I started getting lost with all the they fought for this side and they did this, and they fought for this side and they did that An intriguing way to look at war through each cast member.

Bizarre little book that s written as a Field Guide but doesn t actually have a story per se The Ele Alta and the Cropones are two types of creatures who go to war with ever escalating weapons and technology.
